Who was Henry Ayers?
From Portsea to North Terrace
Just a 19 year old law clerk when he left England for Adelaide, the young Henry Ayers passed himself off as a carpenter to secure assisted passage to South Australia. Once here, Henry made his fortune through the Burra ‘Monster Mine’ as Secretary of the South Australian Mining Association, and went on to be Premier five times over a 37-year parliamentary career.
This magnificent house is both a family home and a statement testifying to the wealth and status Ayers achieved in the fledgling colony.
