Conveniently located on North Terrace, Ayers House is the perfect place to enjoy some old fashioned analogue fun. Explore the house at your leisure and choose from a variety of self-guided activities.

Pennies & Pounds: Make your own coin purse
Who doesn’t like coins? Come to Ayers House Museum and choose 6 coins from our coin collection. Step into our kitchen and mix up some coin polish. Shine your coins and then stitch your own coin bag. You might like to do some coin rubbings too and don’t leave before you check out some of the oldest purses in Adelaide.
Ages: 6-14

Bubble Jar Fun
For kids who like bubbles!
Come to the lovely Ayers House Museum and find out how people did their washing in the 1800s. Then decorate your own bubble mixture jar, make a bubble wand and mix up bubble mixture in our Victorian kitchen. Each child will leave with their own jar of bubble mixture and a bubble wand.
Ages: 6-14
Cost:$15 per child, accompanying adult free. Please note children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

The Fabulous Gaze: Ayers House family ceiling tour
All ceilings aren’t the same. At Ayers House we have low and high ones and ones painted with gold! Explore our ceilings and find out what they tell us about power and purpose. Play Ceiling-Match Mystery then take inspiration from their ornate decoration to design your own stenciling. Ages 6+.

Shadow Play
Make your own shadow puppet theatre
For kids who love making things and putting on shows.
Ayers House Museum is a beautiful Victorian-era mansion located on North Terrace. From its gloomy basement to the radiant chandeliers, there’s nowhere better to explore light and dark than Ayers House Museum. Tour the house and then create your own shadow puppet theatre and shadow puppets.
All families will go home with their own handmade theatre and puppets.

All in the Bag
Make matchbox luggage
For kids who love history and making tiny things.
Find out what Henry and Anne Ayers brought from England when they migrated to South Australia in 1840. Explore Ayers House Museum looking at the trunks and luggage used long ago. Help open an inlaid gown box, see the 19th century ‘laptop’ and discover the best way to transport pianos on sailing ships.
After the tour make a matchbox travelling trunk and fill it up with tiny provisions.

Winter Stories and Peg Dolls
For kids who love stories and music
Come to the beautiful Ayers House and join us for traditional stories told in the cosy nursery. After the stories, have fun making a peg doll inspired by the stories.

Riddle Hunt and Book Making
For kids who love to solve mysteries
Riddles are word puzzles that were popular in Victorian times. They are also popular with Hobbits! Use your cunning to solve riddles as you explore Adelaide’s finest Victorian era home.
Afterwards come up to the schoolroom and try writing with old fashioned pen and ink, and make a riddle book of your own.

A Stitch in Time
For kids who love to explore and make
Tour Ayers House and find out what a pole screen is, and how it feels to stand under 3,000 pieces of crystal. Examine 19th century sewing paraphernalia and then join us in the nursery where you can do some sewing of your own.
